Animal Crossing: City Folk and Let's Go To the City Feng Shui Guide
What feng shui does:
Red feng shui helps your chances of shooting down Mario items for the Mario Theme from balloons. It also increases Redd's chances of stocking rare items, so that means you'll have access to more of his exclusive items and even more real paintings.
Yellow feng shui also helps with Redd find more real paintings and affects the money you get from doing certain things like running errands for villagers. Higher yellow feng shui count also affects your chance of successfully growing a bell (or money) tree. On top of that, it also helps with the amount of money you can get out of rocks smacked with your shovel. If your yellow points add up to 73 or more, you can even get an extra bag of bells!
How to score feng shui points:
What's more, additional feng shui items can be placed ON TOP of the tables for even more points! Let's put some red tulips (any red flower will do as each red flower in the game is red/red for a total of two red points) on top of the tulip tables (tulip tables are placed in green/red cross-over areas to maximize points) and see what happens.
Remember, in order for the green, red or yellow feng shui points to count, these items MUST be placed in their appropriate zone. A red/green item in a green zone will only count toward green. That same item placed in the red zone will only count toward red. In order to get points for both colors, they must be placed in the red/green cross-over zone.
Once in a while you may run across an item that is colored red/yellow. If that's the case, that item will never get both points since red and yellow have no cross-over area, so it's a good idea to pick whichever area of your room needs more feng shui and place it in that zone.
I almost forgot about lucky items! A lot of people are confused about lucky items and I can see why. The problem is, they are called lucky, but unless they have an actual feng shui color they do nothing to increase luck. Each unique (duplicates of the same item don't get bonuses) lucky item gets a 7,777 point HRA bonus just for being lucky, and SOME of them do have feng shui colors (like the Triforce, which is yellow/yellow) and they DO need to be placed in their associated color areas for the feng shui to work. There is a list of all the Lucky Items I know of in the printable catalog lists here that shows all their feng shui colors too. It should be mentioned that the furniture item called Lucky Frog is neither lucky, nor does it have feng shui coloring to bring about luck.
If you're having trouble finding enough items to put in your house for boosting feng shui, remember that ANY item with appropriately colored feng shui can be used and this includes: gyroids, clothing, accessories, flowers, and fossils (the amber fossil is the only fossil with a color other than brown but it has yellow). If you're unsure of an item's color, why not print out the Catalog List here since colors are listed for every item, and keep the pages in a notebook by your game?

Here's a picture of my upstairs room with all appropriately colored items placed in their feng shui areas (I'm not sure whether the dung beetle has feng shui or not but better safe than sorry).

Yay! I finally get to write something so I'm going to write about feng shui! Let me start by saying I like feng shui, I mean, I really, REALLY like feng shui! Actually, I don't like so much that I need to put things in certain places, but I really like that if I DO put stuff in certain places I have a lot better luck! Hmm. Now where should I start? Should I talk first about what feng shui does, or should I talk about how to organize it? Okay, after thinking about it, I'll explain first what having certain colored items put in particular areas of your house does. Then you can decide if you want to know how to do that or not, and if you do you can read the later parts to see where stuff goes.
First of all, there are three feng shui colors that help increase luck. These colors are green, red and yellow. Furniture can have other colors too, but those aren't used for luck. You can find out more about that in the HRA guide.
Green feng shui increases the chances of rare items showing up in your village and city. Tom Nook will stock spotlight items and Redd (that crazy fox in the city) will carry more of his exclusive items and will have a lot better success in finding real paintings intead of forgeries.
Each piece of furniture, no matter its size, has one point for each color it has. For example, a Dharma's two colors are both red, so if it's placed in the red feng shui area, it will score two red points. However, if you put a white golf bag, which has the colors red/white, in the red zone you will only get one red feng shui point for it. A red sofa, also a red/red item, takes up two tiles, but will still only give one point for each red color for a total of two points, not a total of four points for taking up two tiles. And some items, like the tulip table and chair, and daffodil table and chair, have two feng shui colors. I'll use the tulip table as an example here. Its colors are red and green, so it could be used in the green zone for 1 green point, or the red zone for 1 red point, or in the red/green cross-over zone for one green point AND one red point. So, if we compare how many points we would get out of using up the same amount of tile space with these four different items we would have:
YES, the basement counts too!
